Our renewed success as a business, as we emerged from the pandemic, can be largely attributed to our people. Thanks to their ingenuity, energy, and passion, they continue to make Hostelworld a unique and great place to work. We boast thirty-one nationalities across eight locations globally, and our diverse workforce is a genuine source of pride.
We recognise the power of communication and engagement in enabling us to achieve our vision and we actively promote an open, transparent, and collaborative culture through our onboarding of new hires, fortnightly companywide Townhalls and open Q&A sessions, fireside chats, ongoing manager updates and regular 1-2-1s with team members.
Agile and hybrid ways of working
An agile approach to work is at the core of our ethos, strengthening our employee value proposition, and giving our people the flexibility they need to work at their best while ensuring teams are connected and effective, even across the globe. Our team members have the freedom to flex their working location and hours to best meet the business, team, customers, and life needs.
We are acutely aware that flexible working hours and working remotely can mean the boundaries between work and personal time can blur. That is why we champion everyone’s “Right to Disconnect” and have created an environment where team members can disconnect from work, outside of normal working hours and during leave.
Remote working was ranked the most favourable aspect of working at Hostelworld in our annual employee engagement survey. Our hybrid approach does not mandate set days in our office environments, but instead sets remote working as the standard and brings people together in-person to collaborate where it’s truly valuable.
Working from abroad and volunteering
Our “Working From Abroad” policy, provides up to 30 days, or 6 weeks full-time working, in a variety of countries across the globe. This policy was designed to complement our flexible approach, so working hours can be altered to suit different time zones. The 30 days can be used across multiple trips within the year and can coincide with annual leave to allow for a little extra exploring when travelling.
To further support our teams to meet the world, in 2022 we re-introduced Hostelworld credits, an employee benefits scheme that gives our team members a chance to book a stay with any of our hostel partners, at a reduced rate. Trips are unlimited, and bookings can include family and friends, making it cheaper and more accessible for everyone at Hostelworld to travel and embrace agile working.
We’re committed to Building a Better World through serving the communities in which we live and work. With that in mind, we provide volunteering opportunities for team members to support the causes they believe in. Team members can dedicate up to five paid working days a year towards volunteering activities, to share their time and talents with charities, causes or not-for-profit organisations, making a positive difference in their local communities.
Recognition
We understand the importance of recognising our people for their contribution. We celebrate achievements in different ways, no matter how big or small. Underpinned by our behaviours of Grow Others, Master It, Collaborate, Adapt and Deliver, our High Flyers awards recognise team members who deliver outstanding business results and consistently display our behaviours. Alongside this, our Cheers for Peers awards allow for those times when our team members may want to give a quick thank you and shout out, highlighting great work or help given by a teammate.
